2–3a.

2–3a . Adoration of the Magi. The nimbed Virgin Mary and child sit in the centre. On the left stands Balthazar proffering a golden cup shown as a black man. In front of him kneels another king holding out a golden bowl with a lid. He wears a ruby (?) mantle and yellow robe and his hat is on the ground before him. On the right stands Joseph in a murrey mantle and ruby robe with white hood; he holds a golden covered cup. In front of him kneels the oldest magus holding his hat in his left hand. Above are the ruined stable and the star of Bethlehem. The whole is set within a canopied niche. Two pieces of the canopy top, most of the side-shafting and more than three-quarters of the scene are modern repaints. The only original sections of the Adoration scene are the drapery of the two kneeling figures and of Joseph. Since none of the gifts is original, it is evident that Joseph did not originally hold one, although the exact disposition is not recoverable. It is possible that the canopied niche does not belong with the scene. White glass, pot yellow, murrey and blue and flashed ruby, with trace-line, matt wash, relieving and yellow stain. Scene German (?); canopy French. c.1460–70. Mantle bottom left very corroded on outside. Foliage strip at bottom by Yarington. 12
