1a . Fragments of micro-architecture and drapery, the latter part of the robe of the figure in 2a. White, pot pink and green glass, mostly almost opaque and with very worn paint. At base a nineteenth-century blackletter inscription: 'Procumbe viator'. 11 .

2a . The Virgin Mary on her Triumphal Chariot, part of an allegorical window representing the Triumph of the Virgin. 12 The Virgin is seated facing to sinister on an elaborately-carved throne with a ruby cushion wearing a purple nimbus and a light-grey robe with relieved yellow stain diaper, holding a green palm branch over her shoulder with her right hand and a sceptre in her left. On the right is a blue wooded landscape with a castle. White glass, pot blue, green and purple and flashed ruby with trace-line, matt wash, relieving, sanguine (used on throne) and yellow stain. Three or more relieved cross-shaped sorting marks on drapery. France, Rouen, church of Saint-Nicolas. c.1540–1550. The present panel is from 1b of the window 13 . Cut down at top, bottom and on the right. Throne, blue background and lower tip of palm patched with old fragments; further fragments along top. Glass of throne badly corroded on outside; paint loss on Virgin. Ruby glass of cushion may not be original.

3a. Bust of Male Saint. The saint has a ruby nimbus and is bearded, facing to dexter wearing a white robe with beaded collar. White glass and flashed ruby with trace-line, matt wash, stipple shading and relieving. Germany, Cologne, c.1435–c.1440. Rest of shoulders made up with new painted piece on left and fragment, perhaps original, on right. Nimbus patched with modern ruby and badly corroded on outside. 19th-c setting with yellow arch and frame, blue diaper and border of mainly green 16th-c fragments.

4a. Péché (Sin), from Le pèlerinage de la vie humaine (?) (Pilgrimage of the Life of Man). 14 On the right a hybrid creature with a man’s head and torso and light-green serpent’s tail sits red-faced, wearing a blue hat and facing to sinister holding a staff in his left hand and a green branch with a purple flower in his right, on a polycephalic monster with clawed feet. On the left is a ruby leg with cloven foot. There is a green background and above against a blue sky are two scrolls with blackletter texts. The upper reads 'Sensualite' (Sensuality) and the lower,' [V]yse' (Vice). A third scroll on the monster has 'Pech[e]' (Sin). White glass, pot blue, green (two shades) and purple and flashed ruby with trace-line, matt wash, stipple shading, relieving, sanguine and yellow stain, France, Rouen, church of Saint-Nicolas, c.1540–1550. Cut down at top and on left. Front leg of monster, ruby leg and blue hat are restorations; background patched with old fragments. Top of staff new (drawing shows it had a pennant). Some exterior corrosion and several repair leads.

1b . Two demi-angels. One on the left stands with ruby nimbus facing forwards with hands together with yellow wings and white robe with yellow stain decoration; that on the right is seen in striking profile facing to dexter with long ringlet curls and a white robe with yellow stain diaper and ruby wings. White glass, pot-yellow and flashed ruby with trace-line, matt wash, relieving, sanguine and yellow stain. French, c.1530–c.1540. head of left angel not original and of later 16th-c date. Background of fragments, mainly white drapery and light blue glass. Some heavy external corrosion and paint loss.

2b. Demi-figure of St John the Evangelist. The saint stands facing slightly to dexter with his head on his right hand, the left holding a palm branch over his shoulder. He has a blue nimbus and ruby mantle over a white robe. White glass with pot-blue and flashed ruby with trace-line, matt wash, stipple shading, relieving and yellow stain. Germany, Cologne, c.1435–c.1440. Small piece of white drapery near left hand mis-set. White glass rather bubbly. Ruby mantle and blue nimbus quite heavily corroded on outside. Two repair leads. Background modern except for two pieces of yellow micro-architecture which are 15th-c.

3b . The ‘Doctrina’ – the Virgin Mary appears to St Bernard at his desk, accompanied by St Peter and St Paul. On the right St Bernard, nimbed and in a Cistercian habit, kneels at a low table with a murrey cloth and yellow ink pot, holding an open book in his left hand and pointing at it with his left, while looking up and to the left at the bearded and nimbed St Paul, who stands on the left wearing a ruby mantle over a blue robe, leaning with his left hand on an upright sword and pointing with his right at St Bernard. On the right is St Peter, nimbed with yellow mantle and blue robe and holding two large keys. A ray of light descends onto St Bernard’s head from a demi-figure of the Virgin and Child in voluminous white clouds. The Virgin is nimbed and veiled and wears a murrey mantle and blue robe; the Christ Child has a white swaddling cloth. White glass, pot blue and murrey and flashed ruby with trace-line, matt wash, relieving, sanguine and yellow stain. French? c. 1560–c.1580. Piece with heads of Sts Bernard and Paul smashed, stuck edge-to-edge and plated; one or two fragments misplaced. Head of St Peter cracked? Slight scratching of paint in places; a few repair leads.

1–2c. Angel with shield. An angel facing to dexter with ruby nimbus and wings and white surplice with yellow stain hems kneels on one knee supporting on the green grassy ground a blank yellow shield. On the left is the purple and white drapery of a truncated kneeling figure. White glass with pot green and purple and flashed ruby, with trace-line, matt wash, relieving, sanguine and yellow stain. French. c.1530–c.1540. Panel cut down on left and patched on right with green foliage. Some severe external corrosion and paint loss; several repair leads. Above are fragments of mainly green glass and a demi-figure of a small angel with ruby wings facing to dexter, wearing a white surplice and blowing a trumpet from which hangs a banner with argent on a chief three crowns or, for the city of Cologne. Blue background. White glass, pot blue and flashed ruby with trace-line, matt wash, relieving and yellow stain. Germany, Cologne, c.1500. Banner cut off at bottom.

4c. Péché (Sin), from Le pèlerinage de la vie humaine (?) (Pilgrimage of the Life of Man). 15 On the right a hybrid with a man’s head and torso and a serpent’s tail sits holding a staff in his left hand, wearing a white and yellow turban and a girdle of green leaves and facing back to dexter on a polycephalic monster. There is a green grassy background with blue sky at the top. On the left is part of the yellow tunic and left leg in purple hose of the pilgrim. At the top on a scroll in Roman lettering is 'MACVLA NON EST IN TE' (There is no fault in thee); 16 below on scrolls in black letter are 'Lomme' (man) on the left below the pilgrim’s foot and 'Peche' (sin) under the monster. White glass and pot purple and green with trace-line, matt wash, relieving, sanguine and yellow stain. France, Rouen, church of Saint-Nicolas, c.1540–1550. Background parched. Some heavy external corrosion; a few repair leads.

A1. Kneeling Premonstratensian monk. The monk, in a white habit, kneels with hands raised in prayer facing to sinister. White glass with trace-line, matt wash, relieving and sanguine. Germany. Cloister glazing of Premonstratensian monastery of Steinfeld? Severe paint loss and moderate external corrosion. Bottom of figure patched; fringed hanging, blue sky, clouds and red star above, foliage decoration below, all 19th-c.

A2. Kneeling female donor. A lady in a patterned yellow robe with fur trimming kneels before a prie-dieu with ruby covering, facing to dexter with hands joined in prayer. She has an elaborate headdress and necklace. There is a green fringed hanging behind and blue sky, clouds and a red star above and foliage ornament below. White glass, pot blue and green and flashed ruby with trace-line, matt wash, relieving and yellow stain. German, c.1500–c.1520 and English, 19th-c. The only medieval parts are the piece with the hands and the lower part of the yellow robe. The upper part of the figure appears to be a careful copy of an original.

A3 . Part of Joseph sold by his brothers. On the right a bearded man wearing a soft hat, red and white tunic and yellow hose reaches out with his right hand to take money from a bearded man on the left in a white and yellow mantle and fringed tunic. Behind, a man in a striped white and yellow mantle sits on a camel facing to sinister holding a wand; behind is a second camel. White glass with trace-line, matt wash, relieving, sanguine and yellow stain. German. From window XII of the cloister of the Premonstratensian monastery of Steinfeld. 1531 or 1533. Orginally a quatrefoil from the tracery; only top foil and centre survive. Small piece missing on right; moderate exterior corrosion and paint loss. Hind quarters of camel painted on left, blue sky, red star and clouds above, foliage decoration at base, all 19th-c and added old fragments left and right.

B1 . Apostle? The nimbed and bearded saint stands facing to sinister wearing a ruby (or purple) robe and white mantle and holding an open book with cover in his right hand. Green fringed hanging and architectural frame with ruby background above, arcade at bottom. White glass, pot green and purple (?) and flashed ruby with trace-line, matt wash, relieving and yellow stain. German (?), c.1500–c.1520 and 19th-c. The only old parts are an upper section of white drapery and the hand with book. Paint loss, exterior corrosion and repair leads. Restored by Yarington.

B2. Virgin and Child. The nimbed, crowned and long-haired Virgin Mary stands (or sits) facing to dexter wearing a white mantle with yellow stain scalloped hem over a blue robe, holding the nimbed Christ Child on her lap. He wears a purple gown and reaches forward with his right hand. 19th-c setting as B1. White glass, pot blue and purple with trace-line, matt wash, stipple shading, relieving and yellow stain. German. c.1490–c.1510. White drapery over lap with right hand of Virgin 19th-c; insertion of old glass in purple gown. Moderate to severe exterior corrosion and paint loss.

F1. Head of God the Father, with mouth open showing teeth, set on a glory. White glass with trace-line, matt wash, relieving and yellow stain; in situ. 1521? Paint a little rubbed.

A1 . Patterned quarries and fragments. One quarry has 'H', another 'E' and another' I'; the rest have a pattern. White glass with trace-line and yellow stain, first half of 16th-c. Two inserted fragments depict the nimbed Christ Child wearing a yellow patterned gown held by his mother and holding a sprig of flowers in his right hand, and a demi-figure of an angel on a cloud wearing a white surplice. White glass with trace-line, matt wash, relieving and yellow stain. c.1430–c.1450.

Jean Barc, who drew and made an inventory of this window in about 1713 noted that the window was given by ‘Thomas – le peintre vitrier demeurant en ceste paroisse’. It was presumably painted by him or his workshop. The parish was called ‘Saint Nicolas des Peinteurs and many glass-painters lived there. Perrot 1977, p. 45.
