2b. The head and shoulders of a figure of a nimbed archbishop, who stands facing to sinister in a canopied niche with spiral columns, wearing a mitre and grey alb, and with a cross staff. White glass, with trace-line, stipple shading, matt wash, relieving, and yellow stain. c.1500 – c.1520. Piece suffers some paint loss; other disparate fragments used to make up figure, including hand carrying book, piece of drapery with Franciscan triple-knotted cord, and the feet and lower drapery of seated figure (possibly of God the Father). It has been suggested that the figure may represent St Louis of Toulouse, but he does not carry a cross staff, and the triple-knot on its own does not support the identification. 27 The made-up figure is set within a confection of large-scale canopy pieces of varying origin, including two seated lions at the top. Technique as the figure. c.1450 – c.1500.

Ayre 2002, no. 340 (p. 88). Ayre compares this to a St Matthew roundel in Norwich Cathedral (ibid., no. 324 (p. 83)), and also to a lost roundel recorded at Denton. The extant drawing of the Denton roundel is in the style of Winter and so close to the present example that one is tempted to suggest that Ingleby, who published it, made an error in attributing it to Denton; Ingleby 1929, pp. 58–65, pl. It is difficult to discern how much of the canopy tops in B1–4 is original. That in B4 is cut off by the ascending Christ, and the upper parts are not symmetrical. In the other lights, the lower part appears original, but the upper parts do not seem to fit. Return to context

Winter’s watercolour of this panel may be found on line at http://modesimages.norfolk.gov.uk/images/fineart/tc11090.jpg (accessed 13 February 2008). . Cole 1993, no. 1988 (pp. 248–49). Cole notes another version in the Musées Royaux d’Art et d’Histoire, Brussels, and suggests an attribution to the Leuven school. The roundel was supplied by G.
