D1. St Margaret of Antioch standing against a blue background with seaweed diaper in a canopied niche on an ears-of-barley floor, facing to sinister, wearing a ruby mantle over a white robe decorated with a yellow-stain pattern of florets. Footnotes

George A. King’s watercolour of this panel (U.E.A. neg. 40/17/8) gives the full text of the inscription: 'Ordo / Principatu', on a scroll different in shape from that now seen; M. R. James recorded it as ‘ordo principatuu’. Return to context

George A. King’s watercolour of this panel (U.E.A. neg. 40/17/8) gives the full text on the scroll as: ‘Ordo / Potestates’. This is incorrect, as the second word would have been ‘Potestatum’. Return to context

There is a watercolour of this part of the scroll by G. A. King (U.E.A. neg. 40/15/38) on which the name is given as indicated above, with no abbreviation mark for the missing ‘r’. In the modern copy provided by the firm of J. & J. King, the bottom part of the second ‘p’ is not given. Return to context

From Isaiah LXI, 10. The first word of the verse, ‘Gaudens’, is omitted (Authorised version, including missing first word: ‘I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God’). Return to context

Cf. Psalm LXXXIV, 11 (in the Vulgate numbering): ‘misericordia et veritas obviaverunt sibi: iustitia et pax osculatae sunt’ (Authorised Version, Psalm LXXXV, 10: ‘Mercy and truth are met together: righteousness and peace have kissed each other’). Return to context

These initials are of glaziers working for the firm of Bryans. They have been identified as: Alfred Ernest Heasman, who was the chief glass painter; H. Vernon Spreadbury, another glass-painter, who was very good at research; Arthur Tomlinson(?), glazier; and Edgar C. Seeley, glazier. Information in letter dated 1 June 1974 to the writer from Hilda Strickland of St Leonards on Sea, daughter of Ernest Heasman. I am very grateful to Mrs Strickland for this information. This rather sharp practice by a member of the John Wighton workshop is interesting, as Wighton, dead by the time this glass made, was on two occasions a warden of the glaziers’ craft in Norwich, charged with seeking out just such examples of bad workmanship; King 2006, p. 138. Return to context

Almost certainly from the Old Testament cycle recorded in this window (see introduction). 1 and 3 are from Genesis VIII, 16: ‘egredere de arca tu et uxor tua filii tui et uxores filiorum tuorum tecum’ (‘Go forth from the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons’ wives with you’, from the story of Noah and the Ark). 2 is from Genesis XXII, 8: ‘dixit Abraham Deus providebit sibi victimam holocausti fili mi pergebant ergo pariter’ (‘Abraham said: “God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together,’ from the story of the Sacrifice of Isaac).
