St Margaret before Olybrius? St Margaret

third on the left points at her face. To her right is the purple
arm with lozenge pattern of another figure attached to an
elaborate garment with yellow pattern; lower down is a leg in
blue hose. Before her stands a man, facing to dexter in profile,
wearing a ruby tunic with a black twisted branch pattern round
the neck, a yellow fringe at the side, and large green sleeves
diapered with a black pattern, fastened at the waist by a silver
belt with a yellow buckle. White, blue, ruby and green glass,

29
White, blue and purple glass, with
trace-line, stipple shading and yellow stain. c.1430 – c.1450.
Panel much disturbed and altered, and reading of figures is
doubtful, although parts may well belong with the text, which
identifies the subject. Woodforde thought that figure on left
was Nicodemus, but as Christ says the words on the scroll, it
must represent him, if any of the panel is original. Bottom part
of robe and hand are mostly likely original pieces; head is not,
as the nimbus is not crossed. Head on figure on right, which may
well be Nicodemus, has been reversed since illustrated by
Woodforde in 1950 and no longer has a hat over it. The panel is
made up at the sides and top with fragments of
micro-architecture; at the base are parts of two pedestals
decorated with a rosette pattern, and the lower one also has
part of a figure; the background between the figures consists of
medieval fragments, including orange diaper; behind the scroll
the glass is ruby. White, blue, ruby, purple and orange glass,

paint loss on inscription and face of right-hand figure.

Parable of the Unjust Steward? A bearded

and soft blue hat, facing to dexter, holding his beard in his
right hand and an unidentified object in his left. To his right
stands a ?servant in a purple tunic with white belt and hose.
Before him kneels a man at a desk, wearing a blue tunic with
white belt and ruby hose, who holds up an open book for the
bearded man to see. The scene is set in a canopied niche with
chequered pedestal against a ruby background within the niche.
Woodforde thought that this was a depiction of a parable,
probably of the Unjust Steward.
35
It appears to depict the opening scene: ‘There
was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was
accused unto him that he was wasting his goods. And he called
him, and said unto him, What is this that I hear of thee? render
the account of thy stewardship; for thou canst be no longer

Olybrius questions St Margaret. The
scene is set in a canopied niche as in 1a of this window, but

voluminous red mantle with gold trimmings. A large curved
scabbard hangs from a strap ornamented with bells, and on his
head is a crown from which issues a conical headgear decorated
with bands of ornament. He grasps the raised right arm of St
Margaret, who stands on the right, wearing a fillet on her head
and a white mantle decorated with flowers over a blue robe.
Behind Olybrius stands a bearded man in a green garment and
orange hat facing to sinister and holding a sword in a scabbard

Two scenes from the Life of St George
Series, set in a canopied niche, with a seated lion
top centre, on blue clifflets, with yellow and white trees and a
ruby seaweed diaper sky. The main scene, which occupies the
lower half and upper right sections of the panel beneath the
canopy top, depicts the bearded St George in full plate armour
with open visor on his galloping and caparisoned horse attacking
a murrey dragon with yellow-stain wings, which lies on its back
bottom left. The saint holds his sword in the air behind his
head ready to strike, and his broken lance is in his left hand.
Above him to the right stands a maiden in a ruby robe trimmed in
ermine, her hair covered with a yellow net and cauls. In her
right hand she holds a lamb on a leash. The preceding incident
is set top left and depicts St George on his horse as before,
arriving and greeting the maiden dressed as before by raising
his visor with his left hand, his right hand holding a lance. On
the chest of the horse is a small shield with a plain cross, the
arms of St George. Made-up border of fragments top and bottom
and a thin plain fillet at the sides. White, ruby and blue
glass. Technique as 1a of this window. c.1420 – c.1430.
Complete, except for piece of canopy at top to left of lion,
replaced with matching piece, and a larger section of
fore-quarters of the horse, replaced with medieval fragments;
both these are recent intrusions of old glass replacing more
obtrusive earlier insertions.

Horses and hounds and other fragments.
In the bottom part of the panel are fragments with caparisoned
horses’ heads and legs and two hounds on a leash walking in a
landscape with clifflets, from a scene from the Life of St
Margaret Series (where Olybrius is riding in the country and
sees Margaret pasturing her sheep). One of the horses has a
small shield on its breast, Argent a devil’s face
sable, appropriate for a heathen. A fragment with part
of a tunic with belt, from which hangs the hilt of a sword on a
chain that also be from this series. Probably from the Life of
St George series is part of a robe with a cinquefoil pattern and
a hand holding a leash or cord; this may be the king’s daughter
leading the wounded dragon away, but in the panel depicting St
George attacking the dragon she has a ruby robe. Other fragments
include sheaves of corn being gathered; a hand holding a spiked
wheel, set on a seaweed diaper, from a figure of St Catherine;
part of a man carrying a sheep, apparently up a ladder, possibly
from a depiction of Noah entering the ark; parts of two small
men from inhabited canopy shafts; micro-architecture; the base
of a lectern; and parts of seaweed-diaper screens. There are
also pieces of blackletter text: '
vitam
' (perhaps from the Creed scroll text ‘Et vitam
eternam. Amen’ carried by St Matthias); 'ia dn …’;
‘s(an)c(t)us'
or ‘s(an)c(t)a’; 'drac(o) &
co'; and 'nun(c)ia'. The last two
are similar in design, and the reference to a dragon could point
to either the Life of St George Series or the Life of St
Margaret Series. Bottom left is part of a blackletter
inscription reading: 'a(nn)o d(omin)i
mi(llesi)mo ccc lxviio';
this was painted by G. King & Son to replace an original
piece recorded by Woodforde, who mistakenly thought this was the
date of the St Margaret and St George windows. c.1420 – c.1450.

Figure of St James Major and fragments.
A fragmentary main-light bearded figure of St James stands
facing to dexter, holding a staff with scrip and a wallet with a
whelk and a scallop shell, wearing a white mantle with a
yellow-stain hem and rosette pattern and soft leather shoes, on
a pedestal with a chequered rosette pattern and a scroll with
blackletter text: 'S(anctus)
Jacob(us) maio[r]
'.
White glass, with trace-line, stipple shading, and yellow stain.
The figure is confused, and may include parts of two figures, as
two staffs are visible. The piece with the middle section of the
left-hand staff is inside-out. Above the figure is a made-up
canopy top, including a small figure and a piece with pendant
boss like those in the Life of St Margaret Series. Immediately
above the head are two pieces with blackletter text:
'
Et
' and '
Nicolaus
'. c.1420 – c.1450. Exterior corrosion, heavy on
the Life of St Margaret Series micro-architecture, lighter on
the rest; several repair leads on the figure of St James.
