1a. Nimbed figure of the Virgin Mary from an Annunciation kneeling before a prie-dieu covered with a patterned white cloth, facing sinister, with hands crossed over her breast, wearing a blue mantle with yellow beaded hem and a white robe. From her right hand extends a scroll with the blackletter text 'ancilla/ d(omi)ni', across which flies a dove along the rays of a glory. On the desk is an open book and in front of it a pot of lilies. The scene is set against a seaweed-diaper screen with a ruby background at the top. Trace-line, matt wash, relieving. White, pot-blue, and flashed-ruby glass, with yellow stain. c.1460 – c.1470. Top and bottom parts of the original panel gone, intrusions of medieval glass in the screen and prie-dieu. Made up with fragments to fill the main light, including a scroll similar to that in the Annunciation panel, with Gabriel’s greeting to the Virgin on it: 'Ave gratia p /lena d[illegible] ', presumably from the lost companion panel with Gabriel. Also rod-and-leaf border, a piece with another lily-pot on a pedestal, a painted quarry, micro-architecture, and part of a beard (all mid-15th-c), and a piece of vine leaf (14th-c). Around these is a border made up of further fragments, including 14th-c white vine leaf and green foliage, border with relieved lozenge-and-quatrefoil pattern, border with relieved lozenge-and-circle pattern (all 14th-c), and blue glass with relieved plants and yellow stain, pieces of heraldic border with the arms of Wilby (Sable a fess dancetty between three escallops argent), and plain blue glass (all 15th-c). On one piece of 15th-c canopy top is a relieved glazier’s sorting mark. Some of the 14th-c glass is badly corroded.

3b. The Virgin Mary from a main-light depiction of the Annunciation (together with Gabriel in 3a) stands nimbed and with long hair facing to dexter reading from an open book, which she holds in front of her, wearing a long white mantle with a foliage pattern in yellow stain and a beaded hem, fastened with a double morse, over an ermine robe with ruby sleeves and a large strip of ruby mid-way, which is abraded to show a large foliate motif; beneath is a white undershirt, visible at the neck. The robe is fastened at the waist with a long girdle. A nimbed dove on rays of light flies towards her head on the left. She stands against a background of rose-en-soleil quarries between a rod-and-leaf border to left and right. Above her head is a curved scroll bearing in blackletter the text 'Ecce : anci /lla : [behind head] / fiad [sic] : michi :/ : (et) : c(etera). '. 9 Trace-line, matt wash, relieving, abrasion. White and flashed-ruby glass, with yellow stain. c.1460 – c.1470. Parts of mantle on left and background on right patched with medieval fragments, bottom left section of ruby decoration replaced by plain ruby, light to medium external corrosion, a little paint loss. Piece with rose-en-soleil design top left also has part of throne and must be from another panel, perhaps a main-light Trinity.

A shortened version of the biblical text: ‘ascendit autem Ionathan reptans manibus et pedibus et pedibus’ (Authorised Version: ‘And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet’). This text was presumably chosen to accompany the clause of the Creed normally held by St James the Less: ‘Ascendit ad caelos, sedet ad dexteram dei patris omnipotentis’. The text from Samuel is unusual, as it is not spoken by the prophet, but constitutes part of a narrative. Return to context

Authorised Version: ‘And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off’. This presumably accompanied the clause of the Creed normally held by St John: ‘Passus sub Pontio Pilato crucifixus, mortuus et sepultus.’ Return to context
9.
The text is from Luke I, 38: ‘dixit autem Maria ecce ancilla Domini fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum’. While the palatalized ‘c’ in ‘michi’ is common, the voicing of the ‘t’ in ‘fiad’ is very unusual. Authorised Version: ‘And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.’ Return to context
