'Windsor Castle/ August 1863 C.W./ The glass was found in the head of a single lighted Perpendicular window (which had been stopped up) inserted in the wall of a more ancient building, the site of which is now occupied by the "Upper cloisters", Windsor Castle. A small fragment of painted glass of the time of Hen VIII was found with it. [cross symbol] these crosses denote that the glass on the other side, against which they are set, was white glass somewhat later than the rest. [circled cross symbol] This piece of white was apparently of the same colour and texture as the original piece of white.? [The cross symbol is marked against the following: 1) the piece of white glass above the right-hand quatrefoil of the lower row; 2) the upper quatrefoil of the right-hand lobe; 3) the piece of blue glass to the right of the lower lobe of the upper quatrefoil; 4) the central quatrefoil of the lower row, right-hand lobe; 5) piece of blue glass at right-hand end of piece marked with the circled cross symbol (the upper one of the two). The circled cross symbol is marked against the piece of white glass above the left-hand quatrefoil of the lower row.]
